Stump Grinding: What to Expect

What grinding does, how access affects the job, and what happens to the chips afterward.

Grinding instead of full excavation

The machine reduces the stump and immediate root flare below grade rather than digging out an entire root system.

Typical depth

Industrial stump grinders typically work about 6 to 18 inches below grade, depending on the job.

Access matters

Fences, gate width, soft soil, slopes, irrigation, and utilities can all affect equipment access.

What happens to the chips

Chips can be used to backfill the hole, and topsoil and seed can be applied upon request.

Plan the next use

Tell the crew whether you plan to sod, plant, landscape, or build in the area so the scope matches the next step.

Safety: If a tree is touching electrical lines or creates an immediate life-safety hazard, stay away and contact the utility or emergency services first.
